Asking For Your Thoughts……..And Your Top Five Songs!

Often I think back to the first time I fell in love with Beach Music, the first songs I heard and the way it made me feel.  Then I remember the first band I heard and the first time I saw a DJ spin beach, rhythm and blues.  As I start reflecting things come to my mind like the first time I attempted to shag at Fat Harold’s when I was 13 years old with my Aunt; always playing that one cassette my older brother left in my jeep when I was sixteen and rewinding Lady Soul and Brenda listening over and over.  Then times like my first Shag Club I played, playing at Club Faces, attending my first Triangle Beach Music Festival and playing along side of some well known DJ’s at events I had heard about for a long time.  I remember my first time on stage, my first introduction of a band and those, “sweet spots” when I was playing with the dance floor packed to every song I played.  These are some of the things I remember most or stick out in my mind about Beach Music.  As these times come back to me I start thinking about What I Love Most About Beach Music!  I started thinking about the life long friends I’ve met, the feeling I get when I here my favorite songs, the tradition of Beach Music, the fact that my family grew up with this music and I am contributing to keeping the music alive, the smiles on peoples face when I play their favorite songs, and the fact I get to promote the Artists that bring the music to us.  Also, I enjoy a good shag dance as good as anyone.

The reason I have posted this blog is I would love to know what some of your favorite things and times are.  What Do You Love About Beach Music The Most?  What are your favorite things, what’s you favorite places to go, maybe what are some of your favorite times and what you look forward to you every year.  All you have to do is click on the yellow box in the top right hand corner of this blog and leave your comment.  I really want to hear from you.  Also take time to Leave you top five songs of all time, those songs that give you that Beach Music Feeling!  Let’s have some fun with this, can’t wait to hear from you.

    Hey Joey,

Reading your blog brought back a lot of memories. I think the one thing I really love about beach music are the friends you make. They are friends for life, just like you and Rebecca. I also love the fact that the whole family can get involved. From 5, yes today is your girlfriend’s birthday, to 40 something, everyone is having a great time listening and dancing to beach music. I love seeing the “children” at Junior SOS and how they love it too. They are so precious to watch. Michael and I have our parties that we would not miss, beginning the year with Night at the Beach in Clinton, Triangle Beach Music Festival in Garner, Carolina Beach Music Awards each November in Myrtle Beach, Shagging for Santa in Clinton, Joe Wilson’s Christmas Party with the Holiday Band in Spivey’s Corner. The year would not be complete without them. I love that my oldest, Lauren, a soon to be Freshman at NC State, loves to shag and go with us to see the great bands.

My top 5 songs change from time to time, but I love Ms. Grace, Under the Boardwalk, Shamma Lamma, 10 Ways of Loving You, and of course, Don’t Let the Green Grass Fool Ya.

Hope to see you and Rebecca soon. We love you both!

Of course the best thing about Beach music is the people. I have made some great friends in my years of being in the business that will stay with me for life. My fondest memories have to come from the days of J. Albert’s in Southern Pines. I often remember all the bands and fans that came thru that club. As for favorite songs that is a tough one. I love the old stuff but really enjoy some of the new. These are my top five right now but that may change tomorrow.

1-Love no longer has a hold on me–The Breeze
    2-I Love Beach Music–The Embers
    3-She Poured it On–Coastline
    4-Ten Ways Of Lovin You–Entertainers
5-Shama Lama Ding Dong–Band of Oz

CUZ, you and I don’t have time for me to list all the things that I love about this music. Just like Mr.Cranberry & K-dogg, the people who come together for these events that we attend and have such great times at, but thats just a drop in the bucket! When I see a packed dance floor, and Mr. Cranberry shagging to C.W.B, it just makes it that much better! My family and I made it to JR. SOS this past summer and my daughter learned how to shag. Now, if there is beach music anywhere close to home, she wants to go! It’s one thing to shag with your wife, but to dance with your daughter, man thats awsome! I have thousands of memories that relate to beach music, but, just think of the ones we haven’t made yet. Top 5 songs? You know better than to ask us that! Where do i start? In no order, or, as follows? I’ll let you sort them out!

    Cry mercy mercy~The Lamplighters
    Beautician blues~Bryan Lee
    UHH!~Joe Lewis Walker
    Walkin’ Dr. Bill~The Tams
I’m Tired Of Being Your Fool~Bill Pinkney & The Drifters

Honorable mention would be anything from C.W.B., Mr.Cranberry and myself will have to get together to pick one out! SEE Y’ALL SOON!
